The “Kreutzer” Sonata: An Evolving Legacy

Beethoven composed his Op. 47 in 1803, originally dedicating it to George Bridgetower, an Afro-European virtuoso who premiered the work with Beethoven. Soon afterwards, Beethoven and Bridgetower quarreled over a woman and Beethoven re-dedicated the piece to Rodolphe Kreutzer. The "Kreutzer" name lived on with the piece.

The Washington Classical Review's Top Concerts of 2018!

The Washington Classical Review include two Shriver Hall Concert Series performances in its top picks of 2018! Hailed as "a connoisseur of sound", pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard's recital in March at Kraushaar Auditorium is included in its 'Top Ten Concerts' of the year, described as "a program of curiosities and revelations." And, cellist Truls Mørk and pianist Behzod Abduraimov's duo-recital in May at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation is highlighted as a 'Most Welcome Return.'

In Memoriam: Jephta Drachman

The Board of Directors and Staff of Shriver Hall Concert Series mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague Jephta Drachman. Jephta served as a Director from 1987 to 2017, including 20 years as President. SHCS thrives today because of her vision, energy, determination, and inspiring leadership. She raised the series' level of artistry, led a successful endowment campaign, and recruited a devoted patron base.

SHCS 2018-19 Season Featured in Baltimore Sun, Washington Classical Review, and Baltimore Style

Local media sources have highlighted upcoming SHCS events this season. The Zukerman Trio (Sep 23) and  Harlem Quartet (Nov 3) were featured in the Baltimore Sun’s 2018 Fall Arts Guide as part of the ’10 classical music performances not to miss in Baltimore this fall’. Piotr Anderszewski (Apr 7) has been highlighted as one of Washington Classical Review’s Critic’s Choice concerts for 2018-19.  Our entire 2018-19 season has also been featured in Baltimore Style.

FBO Concert Featured in Glowing May Review

Tim Smith at The Baltimore Sun featured Shriver Hall Concert Series' May 12 performance with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout in his positive account of May "treats" from the Baltimore classical music scene. The concert, which took place at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Owings Mills, was the final performance of SHCS' 2017-18 season.

2018-19 Season Announcement

Shriver Hall Concert Series recently announced our 53rd season of stellar music-making! Washington Classical Review’s Charles T. Downey published an article highlighting our fabulous roster of artists for the upcoming 2018-19 season. Features of the season include multiple Baltimore debuts—such as the Zukerman Trio, Hagen Quartet, and pianist Imogen Cooperand premieres of new works by Thomas Adés, Gabriela Lena Frank, Vijay Iyer, R.
