SHCS’s new season opens with the Baltimore Debuts of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and its Principal Conductor Maxim Emelyanychev, as part of the ensemble’s first North American tour since 2010. Together they perform works by Anna Clyne, SCO’s Associate Composer, and Classical-era composers Mozart, Haydn, and their lesser-known colleague Pavel Vranický. Hannah Lash’s New Work for the Calidore Quartet, commissioned by Shriver Hall Concert Series, The Segerstrom Center for the Arts (CA), and The Concertgebouw (Netherlands), receives its East Coast premiere. Celebrated pianist Paul Lewis gives his long-awaited Baltimore Recital Debut in an imaginative recital anchored by works inspired by visual art and art song. Pianist Daniil Trifonov, in a program with fellow 2011 Tchaikovsky Award winner cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, returns for his third Baltimore appearance. This past Sunday, tenor Lawrence Brownlee gave a riveting Baltimore Recital debut with pianist Myra Huang in Shriver Hall. Brownlee performed a program pairing Schumann's beloved Dichterliebe with Cycles of My Being, a new song cycle made in collaboration with composer Tyshawn Sorey and poet Terrance Hayes that investigates the experience of living as a black man in today’s America.
Reviewer Tim Smith described the performance as "All powerful, heady stuff — and extra-meaningful in a city coming up on five years since the death of Freddie Gray."
